Genre is used to group together books with similar styles and themes.

A book can be assigned to multiple genres, for example crime and historical.

Subject areas are the equivalent of fiction genres for non-fiction books. 

Which is not to say that non-fiction books can't also belong to a genre, or that a subject area might not also be a form of genre for a fiction book.
